Make no mistake, Ryan Decenzo is in the business of having fun. Or is he having fun doing business? Paradoxically, the fun can be quite a bit of work these days...and the work, well its actually pretty fun.
To the over-achieving 25-year old Canadian skateboard star that time-shares his days between Huntington Beach, CA and Vancouver, BC, each moment of each week is spent building what is clearly a legitimate international career as a skateboarder.
What exactly does this entail? Let’s start with the great stuff: living, growing, and skating daily with some of your best friends, including your wildly-talented younger brother, Scott (aka Scoot, aka Scooter), getting paychecks in the mail to skateboard, seeing yourself in the world’s top skate mags and videos. Then the mostly good stuff: finding new spots, pounding away at your phone to connect with fellow area pros, photogs, and related industry peeps, traveling, competing, and helping out the generation below you. Then the lames: taxes, and the organization of receipts, sending invoices, booking travel, making sure your health insurance is updated, healing up from injuries, and navigating the politics of an industry that can be surprisingly intense.
All of this is the life of Ryan. Not the one on MTV - the one that’s on the come-up, a young man becoming a leader to many, doing it in the style of the Canadian skate embassy that is the house on Goldenwest Ave in the OG action-sports community known as Huntington, CA. The house is the foundation - nearly every piece of ‘art’ tells a story. And the ping-pong table has clearly seen some legitimate night sessions, thanks to a creative party game invented by the tenants.
For Ryan, the best days have always been the classics. “Man, there’s nothing I like better than coming home from a big trip - getting my homefront dialed back in - and then going for a supersession with my bro and my friends - just getting stoked on what one another are doing, and how we’ve progressed since we’ve been away. That’s still the best.”
Until a few years ago, Ryan was known only in his native Vancouver area. He was one of a few groms that was respected enough to make it onto the legendary RDS Red Dragon squad. He paid his dues and didn’t ask questions. Then came the contest circuit and giant results like The Tampa Am Championship; X Games, Dew Tour, and Maloof Money Cup podiums;and all the accompanying TV exposure. The NBC coverage. The Splash in the international skate projects and trips with Red Bull and Globe, deals with a dozen other mainstream and endemic sponsors, and you can only arrive at the conclusion that he has one of the best, and busiest pro skateboard careers in the world.
Have fun working, Ryan. We know you've still got the best job in the world.
