Now and again someone comes along in a sport and flips it upside down for awhile. In this case, that’s happening both figuratively and literally. The buzz around BMX phenom Drew Bezanson is not hype. And despite the polarizing fervor of the most intense BMX blogs, it’s really not subject to debate.

So who is this guy? Start with humble beginnings in Truro, Nova Scotia. Drew’s family is one of the nicest that a person could hope to meet. To call them genuine would be an understatement. They embody the spirit of Atlantic Canada - do what you have to; do it with conviction; and unless it’s absolutely a critical life-or-death situation, there’s no need to claim it.  Drew has gone on to share this bighearted and good-natured attitude all over the globe and he has thus captivated fans and fellow riders alike.  In one such instance, Drew participated in the pioneering demo event, “Bikes Over Baghdad,” which brings both BMX and entertainment to American armed forces in Iraq, providing both soldiers and riders the opportunity to come together for an unprecedented event, and forget for a minute that they are halfway around the globe in one of the most perilous places on earth.

Onto the next question now. How did the guy get to be so damned good? How do you develop those skills without being born in an indoor park? Drew answers, “I just love to ride, so that’s what I did.” In an era of over-complicated sophistication in nearly every facet of life, isn’t that refreshing.

Like the rest of us, Drew B started riding a bike as a 2 year-old. He just never stopped. Surely there are lots of BMX riders who have that in common with Drew, however he’s anything but common. For starters, Drew has made a living atop the TranswWorld’s exposure meter for several months at a time -- a testament to his dedication is as well as his popularity among BMX media, riders and fans. And then, how many BMX riders come from places where snow covers the ground more than half the year? Jay Miron and Dave Osato...sure, but sorry, guys. The frosty tundras of the Canadian prairies are no match for Drew’s home in the Atlantic Canadian Maritimes. Halifax has a cold that is all its own. The icy patches of the north Atlantic lie just to your side as you sit and wonder if any sun could possibly melt the cold around you. So what does that do? It builds character. The kind of character that makes a guy like Drew, who has already won the contest go back for the one trick he couldn't quite land during his official run and stomp it down. Why does he do it? This is part of Drew’s DNA – to delight the audience around him, and for the sense of the very real accomplishment for himself.

At the end of the day, Drew Bezanson isn’t sure where all of this will bring him in the end. He’s just enjoying every minute of it. And while his sights are set on delivering mind-blowing video edits and contest wins, he seems to be winning quite a few hearts along the way, too.
